News in and around Rippey: Weekend guests in the home of Virgene Morse Nov. 14-15 were Diane and Terry Ostendorf and Ben of Madrid, Kevin and Delores Blanshan of Waterloo, and Kelsey Banshan of Ankeny. They did yard work, puttering around the farm, saw the tree planted in memory of Dale, and met Walter the Calf. Good food and laughs made the weekend complete. Regrets were sent by Madelyn and Michaela Ostendorf (who had all four wisdom teeth pulled the day before).
Gary and Mary Weaver, and David, Emily and Ada Weaver traveled to Sioux City on Wednesday afternoon to the home of Matt and Theresa Basye. Matt was the Thanksgiving chef preparing a traditional meal of turkey, dressing, two kinds of potatoes, along with pumpkin pie. Lauryn and Nathan enjoyed hosting their cousin Ada. The three had an enjoyable time placing “chase games” throughout the day. Pat Basye joined them for the noon meal.
The most interesting event was a possum trying to kidnap the turkey from the deck as it was being brined in the ice chest on Thanksgiving eve. Luckily Matt heard the ice chest being moved on the deck and frightened the possum away.
Gary and Mary returned on Thursday evening.
Southern travels: Dale and Nancy Hanaman enjoyed their recent trip to visit family and friends beginning with Nancy’s cousin and family, Ruth and Jim Dobbin and their daughter, Carole, in Ballwin, MO. While there, they ventured to The Cheesecake Factory with Carole and selected various versions of the chocolate delicacy to take to Ruth and Jim’s to enjoy. Next stop was Nashville, TN, to spend time with a longtime friend Lloyd Lewis and Nancy, cousin and wife Ken Klocksiem and Judy Davison. Dale and Lloyd met when they were both beginning their clergy careers in Appleton and Green Bay, WI. While there, Lloyd took them to see the sites including the replica of the Parthenon, an art museum and to view the “Batman” building.
Dale and Nancy then journeyed to the Atlanta, GA, area to visit with Nancy’s aunt Marguerite Klocksiem, her cousin Marianne Klocksiem and her husband Jim Purvis, and nephew and wife Alex and Heather Bardole. Marguerite shared her recollection of her childhood in Wisconsin and Iowa and other family stories. Nancy and Dale with Marianne and Jim spent a day at President Jimmy Carter’s Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta. The museum includes many interesting displays with a replica of the Oval Office during President Carter’s time in office and many video presentations of his life and his time in office and the years since. On the return trip, Nancy and Dale were welcomed back to Iowa with the wind and snow just south of Des Moines and a long snow packed trip on the last leg of the journey. It was good to be home.
Thanksgiving and birthday: Nancy and Dale Hanaman enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with their daughter and family, Sarah and Benji Pearson, Steven, Elizabeth, and Andrea in Superior, WI. Their son and his girls, Matthew Hanaman and Adrianna and Adyara from Rice Lake, WI, also shared in the day. Andrea’s 9th birthday party included Grandpa Dale making balloon animals for the young party crew. A family celebration the next day concluded the birthday festivities.
Shawn and Lori DeMoss of Rippey hosted their family Thanksgiving on Saturday, Nov. 28. As usual, the food was plentiful, the conversations were entertaining, laughter filled the household. Some of the guys had spent the morning hunting pheasant near Rockwell City.
Those attending were, Bob and Kathy VanGundy of Jamaica; Jeff and Angie VanGundy, Anna and Gabrielle of Washington; Shelly and Bill Hamman of Pell City, AL; Kelly and Denny Mleynek of Panora; Tara VanGundy of Grinnell; Travis VanGundy of Des Moines; Marc and Shannon DeMoss of Rockwell City; Zach, Michael, and Hannah DeMoss of Iowa City; Kyle and Emily DeMoss, Gabe and David of Jefferson; Bryce and Kari DeMoss of Newell; and Jean Borgeson of Rippey.
Most of the group migrated to Jamaica for the evening festivities honoring Jeff VanGundy on his special 50th birthday.
